In a crowded fantasy MMO landscape filled with competitors, it’s difficult to stand out in the crowd, but Trion is giving it a valiant try with their new IP, Rift. But will they be able to topple the dominating behemoth that is World of Warcraft? Let’s look at the details.

The first impression I had was “Wow, this looks a LOT like World of Warcraft.” The color schemes and geography styles are similar as are avatar styles, though in Rift the different races seem to all be in the almost-human variety and the proportions are less cartoony. You can pick from one of two factions, Guardians and Defiants, of which, much like in WoW, neither is really “evil”, just different perspectives on how to handle how the world has become. It’s more like Spira vs. Al-behd from Final Fantasy X rather than zerg vs. terrans.

What the world has become is a place where war has broken out between neighboring planes as the denizens of said neighboring planes have decided they like the game world’s plane better than their own and made the decision to invade. Has no one heard of diplomacy or immigration in the realm of fantasy? Starting some sister city programs would solve SO many problems.
